AVIF to PNG: help & limits
About this tool
Use PNG when your next editor needs a conventional image file with transparent areas intact. Reqly converts a supported still AVIF into PNG without adding JPEG compression. The checkerboard in the preview indicates transparency and is not saved into the picture. PNG files can be considerably larger, and browser color conversion can change the appearance of HDR or wide-gamut sources.
How to use
- Select one supported still AVIF image.
- The browser decodes it locally and creates a PNG. Inspect transparent edges and compare the preview with Original.
- Download the PNG after checking its measured size. Choose AVIF to JPG if you need JPEG compatibility and do not need transparency.
Supported files
Still AVIF · Up to 64 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.
How it works
The bounded container inspection checks still-image brands and declared dimensions. Native browser decoding supplies pixels to an offscreen canvas, which encodes PNG. Reqly verifies the PNG signature and dimensions. PNG avoids an additional lossy JPEG encode; it does not reverse the compression already applied to the AVIF.
Examples
A transparent graphic for a slide
Convert a supported 800 × 600 transparent AVIF graphic into PNG for a presentation. Its transparent areas stay transparent in the output; the preview checkerboard is only a viewing aid.
A diagram for a PNG-only editor
Turn a supported 1,200 × 900 AVIF diagram into a 1,200 × 900 PNG. Check fine labels at their intended display size; format conversion does not sharpen blurry text.
Limitations
- Requires native browser support for decoding the selected AVIF variant. A failed decode is reported without sending the image elsewhere.
- AVIF animation and sequences are unsupported. Exact HDR/color-profile appearance, higher bit depth and source metadata are not guaranteed to survive.
- PNG can exceed the source size and the 128 MiB output limit. Low-memory devices may fail below the stated input limits.
Privacy
Reading the container, decoding pixels and building the PNG all happen locally. No filename, metadata value or file bytes are sent to a server. Reset stops active processing and releases the image references retained by the tool.
Local processing explainedCommon questions
Does PNG recover detail lost in the AVIF?
No. It saves the pixels the browser decoded. Missing texture or blurred text cannot be recovered by changing formats.
Why is my PNG much larger?
PNG uses a different compression method. Photographs that are compact in AVIF often become large PNGs, so compare the measured sizes before using the result.
Does the checkerboard get saved?
No. It is a preview background used to show transparent areas. Supported transparent pixels remain transparent in the PNG.
