GIF to JPG: help & limits
About this tool
Save a still JPG from the first frame of a GIF. This is useful when a document or upload form needs a photograph-style image rather than an animation. The output contains one frame only, and transparent areas become white. Preview the result before downloading: a GIF’s opening frame may not show the moment you wanted.
How to use
- Choose a GIF after reading the first-frame notice.
- Check the still JPG preview. Transparent areas are filled with white.
- Download the JPG if the opening frame suits your task.
Supported files
GIF87a / GIF89a · Up to 32 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.
How it works
A bounded GIF parser checks the logical screen, frame bounds and data blocks. The browser creates a bitmap of the first frame, then encodes JPG at quality 92. No animation is played in the tool and no later frames are selected.
Examples
A still image for a document
Convert a 640 × 480 GIF to a 640 × 480 JPG of its first frame. Use the preview to check that the introductory frame contains useful content.
A transparent badge on white
Convert a GIF badge with transparent corners to JPG. Those corners become white, which may suit a white document background.
Limitations
- First frame only; no timeline or later-frame selection. If the opening frame is blank, the output may be blank too.
- JPG is lossy and cannot retain GIF transparency. A still JPG does not replace an animation when movement matters.
- Maximum 16,384px per edge and 1,000 frames. Unsupported structures, plain-text rendering blocks and corrupt files fail locally. Browser decoding behavior and low memory can still limit support.
Privacy
The GIF is checked and decoded locally in a worker. Neither its frames nor its filename is sent to a server. The original animation stays unchanged on your device.
Local processing explainedCommon questions
Will the JPG move?
No. JPG stores a still image. This tool explicitly extracts only the opening frame.
Can I choose a frame from the middle?
No. Frame selection is not included. Use a dedicated animation editor when the first frame is not suitable.
Why did transparent areas turn white?
JPG has no alpha channel. Use GIF to PNG if you need the first frame with supported transparency.
