HEIC to PNG: help & limits
About this tool
Create a PNG when an editor or document workflow requires it instead of HEIC. Reqly decodes one supported still photo locally, then saves the decoded pixels in PNG format without adding JPEG compression. The file may be much larger than the original. PNG does not recover missing detail or guarantee that HDR and wide-gamut colors look identical.
How to use
- Choose a single still HEIC or HEIF photo within the displayed limits.
- The local decoder loads and creates a PNG automatically. Wait for the preview and measured file size.
- Review orientation and colors, then download. Use HEIC to JPG instead if a broadly compatible photo file is all you need.
Supported files
Still HEIC / HEIF · Up to 32 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.
How it works
A bundled WebAssembly HEIC decoder runs in a dedicated worker. It accepts a supported single-image container, checks pixel limits, and supplies RGBA pixels to an offscreen canvas. The browser encodes PNG and Reqly verifies its signature and dimensions. This output is an ordinary 8-bit raster image, not a preservation copy of every HEIF feature.
Examples
A photographed diagram for an editor
Convert a supported 2,000 × 1,500 HEIC photo of a diagram into a 2,000 × 1,500 PNG. PNG avoids another JPEG encode, but it cannot sharpen lettering already blurred in the photo.
A portrait for a PNG-only workflow
A supported 3,024 × 4,032 still HEIC becomes a PNG at its decoded portrait dimensions. Check the actual size: a large PNG can exceed an upload form’s limit even when the HEIC was small.
Limitations
- HEIF sequences, multiple top-level images and HEIC alpha are rejected in this version. PNG output does not mean alpha-bearing HEIC is supported.
- HDR, wide-gamut appearance, depth, motion and source metadata are not preserved as a guarantee. Review the converted colors before sharing.
- Requires WebAssembly, Web Workers and worker Canvas. Unsupported variants fail locally; no server fallback is used.
- PNG can be large. The output limit is 128 MiB, and low-memory devices may fail below the file or pixel limits.
Privacy
The HEIC decoder is downloaded as website code; your photo is not part of that request. Decoding and PNG encoding run on your device, with no remote conversion service. Cancelling stops the worker, and reset releases the tool’s file and preview references.
Local processing explainedCommon questions
Does PNG preserve everything in my HEIC?
No. It stores the decoded 8-bit still image. HEIF metadata, auxiliary images, HDR characteristics and motion are not carried over as a complete archive.
Why would I choose PNG instead of JPG?
Choose PNG when your next tool specifically requires it or when you want to avoid another lossy JPEG encoding step. JPG is often a more compact choice for ordinary photographs.
Can this make the background transparent?
No. Conversion does not remove a background. Alpha-bearing HEIC files are not supported by this decoder integration yet.
