Image color picker: help & limits
About this tool
Read the color of a particular pixel in an image without uploading it. Click the preview, use arrow keys or enter an exact coordinate to see HEX, RGB and HSL values. A magnified neighborhood helps you find edges and tiny details. Opacity is shown separately so transparent pixels are not mistaken for solid paint colors. On supported browsers, Pick from screen lets you select one displayed color without choosing an image.
How to use
- Choose, drop or paste a still image of up to sixteen megapixels, or use Pick from screen when available.
- For an image, click a pixel or use arrow keys on the preview. For screen picking, select a pixel with the browser’s eyedropper; Esc cancels.
- Read opacity alongside the color codes, then copy the representation you need.
Supported files
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, BMP, still GIF · Up to 64 MiB · 16 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge.
How it works
The browser decodes the orientation-corrected image and reads canvas RGBA values at original pixel resolution. HEX and RGB describe the three decoded color channels; HSL is calculated from them and rounded to whole units. The magnifier shows a nine-by-nine neighborhood without smoothing. No background is blended into image pixel channels. Screen mode uses the browser’s EyeDropper API, which returns a single displayed sRGB color. It does not return source transparency, screen coordinates or an image; Reqly converts the selected HEX value to RGB and HSL.
Examples
Find a screenshot accent
Select a solid button area in a screenshot. Move one pixel at a time to avoid anti-aliased edge colors, then copy its HEX value.
Inspect a transparent logo edge
Choose an edge pixel in a PNG and check its opacity. A 50%-opaque red pixel is not equivalent to a solid red pixel when placed on a background.
Limitations
- Screen picking requires a secure context and browser support for EyeDropper. Some embedded browsers expose the API but cannot open its native picker. If unavailable, choose or paste a screenshot instead. A displayed screen color may differ from an image’s original pixel because of compositing or color management.
- Values describe the browser-decoded pixel, not a guaranteed original color-space measurement. Embedded profiles, HDR and browser color conversion can affect results.
- HEX is six-digit RGB; opacity is separate. Fully transparent pixels may contain meaningless RGB values. JPEG compression can change sampled colors near edges.
- Sixteen megapixels maximum to bound full-resolution pixel memory. For larger files, resize first; that changes the pixels you will sample. Still images only. HEIC uses a local decoder; AVIF needs native browser support.
Privacy
Decoding and pixel reading happen on your device. Image data is held in memory, not uploaded or saved in browser storage. Pasting reads only image files supplied by your explicit paste action; Reqly does not automatically read your clipboard. Screen mode opens only when you press its button. Reqly receives the selected color, not a recording or screenshot, and does not transmit or persist it. Copy writes only the selected code to your clipboard after you press its button.
Local processing explainedCommon questions
Why is Pick from screen unavailable?
Your browser must support the native EyeDropper API in a secure context. Reqly does not replace it with screen recording. Some in-app browsers expose the API but close it immediately. Try a supporting desktop browser, or choose or paste a screenshot; image picking remains local.
What happens if I cancel the screen picker?
Your previous image or selected color stays in place. You can try again or continue copying its codes.
Why do nearby pixels have different HEX codes?
Gradients, JPEG compression and anti-aliased edges can produce many similar colors. Use the magnifier and select a flat interior area when looking for a typical color.
Can I pick a pixel without a mouse?
Yes. Tab to the image and use arrow keys; Shift moves ten pixels. Exact pixel fields provide another keyboard option.
Does the copied HEX include transparency?
No. HEX, RGB and HSL represent RGB channels. Read the separate opacity value and add an alpha value in your design tool when needed.
