Image compressor: help & limits

About this tool

Make an image easier to attach, publish, or share. Choose a file to get an automatic result at its original dimensions. Open Adjust compression if you want to change quality or output format. There is no promised compression percentage: a detailed photograph behaves differently from a flat illustration, and an already efficient image can grow.

How to use

  1. Choose a supported still image. Compression starts automatically.
  2. Compare the original and result. If needed, open Adjust compression to change quality or format; the result updates automatically.
  3. Check text, faces, and edges in the result. Download when the size and appearance suit your task.

Supported files

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, BMP, still GIF · 64 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.

How it works

Reqly keeps the original dimensions and encodes at quality 85 by default. JPEG input stays JPEG; Other supported inputs become WebP to retain transparency. You can change the quality or format under Adjust compression. Quality is an encoder hint, not a percentage of original detail. Actual bytes are measured after encoding. JPEG fills transparent areas with white; WebP can retain transparency.

Examples

A product photo for a listing

Compress a 4,000 × 3,000 photo at its original dimensions, then try JPEG quality 80 under Adjust compression. Inspect small product lettering before deciding whether the tradeoff is acceptable.

An illustration in an email

Keep a 1,200 × 800 illustration at its existing dimensions and try WebP quality 85. Check whether your recipient’s software supports WebP, then compare the measured output size.

Limitations

  • No exact target file size or guaranteed reduction. Lower quality may introduce visible artifacts.
  • PNG input is converted to JPEG or WebP; this is not a lossless PNG optimizer. JPEG cannot retain transparency.
  • Animations are rejected. Re-encoding may change metadata, color profiles, and subtle colors. Browser encoders differ.
  • Large images may fail below the limits on low-memory devices. A worker is stopped after 60 seconds.

Privacy

Quality comparisons and compressed copies are created in a worker on your device. The selected image, its name, and its contents are not sent to Reqly or to a compression service.

Common questions

Why did compression make my image larger?

The original may already be highly compressed. Try lower quality or another output format. To reduce dimensions, use the related image resizer. Keep your original if the result is not useful.

Should I lower quality or resize first?

If the image will be displayed smaller, use the image resizer to reduce dimensions first. Then lower quality gradually while checking the preview. Text and sharp graphics often need more care than photographs.

Can I keep a transparent background?

PNG and WebP inputs use WebP output by default to retain transparency. Keep WebP selected; JPG replaces transparency with white.
