Image rotator: help & limits
About this tool
Turn a sideways image upright or mirror it for your layout. Use left and right quarter-turns, horizontal flip or vertical flip, then check the result against the original. Changes always start from the selected source, so repeated button presses do not repeatedly compress the previous output. JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format; other supported inputs export PNG.
How to use
- Choose a supported still image.
- Turn left or right by 90 degrees, or toggle a horizontal or vertical flip. The preview updates locally.
- Compare Original and Result, then download the rotated copy. Start over returns all controls to their defaults.
Supported files
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, BMP, still GIF · 64 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.
How it works
The browser first applies supported source orientation. Quarter-turns rotate the decoded pixels clockwise; 90 and 270 degrees swap the output width and height. Flips act along the original image axes before rotation. The result is re-encoded from the original source at quality 92 for JPG/WebP.
Examples
Fix a sideways landscape
Turn a 1,200 × 800 image right once. Its output becomes 800 × 1,200; no corners need to be cropped for a quarter-turn.
Mirror an illustration
Toggle Flip horizontal on a PNG illustration. Its dimensions stay the same and supported transparent regions remain transparent.
Limitations
- Quarter-turns only. Arbitrary-angle straightening and perspective correction are not included.
- This re-encodes pixels; it is not a lossless JPEG rotation utility. Original metadata and exact color profiles are not preserved as a guarantee.
- Still images only. HEIC and AVIF can be opened directly and export PNG. Device memory and native codec support can limit processing.
Privacy
Rotation settings, source pixels and the encoded copy remain on your device. The preview and download use temporary local URLs that are released when replaced or reset.
Local processing explainedCommon questions
Why did the width and height swap?
A 90-degree or 270-degree turn changes which edge is horizontal. A half-turn or flip alone keeps the original dimensions.
Do four right turns restore the original file?
They restore its visual orientation, but the download is still re-encoded. Keep the source file if you need byte-for-byte equality.
Why does a phone photo already look upright?
The browser applies supported orientation metadata while decoding. This tool then rotates or flips that displayed orientation.
