JPG to PNG: help & limits

About this tool

Create a PNG when a design app, document workflow, or upload form specifically needs one. Reqly reads your JPG locally and automatically makes a PNG at its decoded dimensions. This avoids adding another JPEG encoding step, but it cannot reverse existing compression or turn the background transparent. Check the preview and file size before keeping the new copy.

How to use

  1. Choose a JPG or JPEG image. The actual file format is checked, not just its extension.
  2. Wait for the PNG preview and compare it with Original. Camera orientation is applied when the browser decodes the picture.
  3. Download the PNG. If the file is too large for your next step, consider resizing it first.

Supported files

JPG / JPEG · Up to 64 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.

How it works

The browser decodes JPEG pixels with image orientation applied, then a worker draws them into a canvas and encodes PNG. Reqly checks the output signature and dimensions. PNG compression does not add JPEG-style loss, but browser color conversion and the source’s existing compression still affect appearance.

Examples

A portrait for a design document

A camera JPEG that displays as 1,200 × 1,600 becomes a portrait PNG at those decoded dimensions. Inspect orientation before placing it in your document.

A screenshot saved as JPEG

Convert a 1,024 × 768 JPEG screenshot for a PNG-only workflow. The PNG remains 1,024 × 768; text blurred by the original JPEG does not become sharper.

Limitations

  • PNG output is often larger than JPEG, especially for photographs. The 128 MiB output limit still applies.
  • A JPEG background remains part of the picture. Conversion cannot create a transparent cutout or recover missing detail.
  • Source metadata and exact color profiles are not preserved as a guarantee. Large images may fail on low-memory devices.

Privacy

The JPEG is read into browser memory and processed in a local worker. The PNG and its preview stay on your device. No file contents or filename are included in website requests, and the original is not overwritten.

Common questions

Will the PNG look sharper?

No additional image detail is created. PNG stores the decoded pixels, including any blur or artifacts already present in the JPEG.

Can I change .jpg to .png instead?

Renaming changes only the filename. This tool decodes and encodes a real PNG that other software can recognize.

Does a white background become transparent?

No. White JPEG pixels stay visible. A format conversion does not identify or remove a background.
