PNG to WebP: help & limits

About this tool

Turn a still PNG into a WebP while keeping transparent areas. This is useful for web illustrations, product cutouts and other images that need an alpha channel. Review thin edges, small text and subtle gradients in the preview: this converter uses lossy WebP, so it changes more than just the file extension.

How to use

  1. Choose a still PNG with or without transparency.
  2. Compare the WebP preview with the original, paying attention to edges and small text.
  3. Download the WebP, or keep your PNG if the new format does not suit the image.

Supported files

Still PNG · Up to 64 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.

How it works

PNG pixels are decoded locally and encoded as WebP at quality 92 out of 100. Transparent regions remain transparent; the checkerboard is only a preview aid. The browser encoder controls the exact output.

Examples

A cutout for a product page

A transparent 1,200 × 1,200 PNG becomes a WebP at the same size. Check the soft edges against the preview’s checkerboard before downloading.

An illustration with small labels

Convert a 900 × 600 PNG chart and compare its lettering. Keep the PNG if lossy WebP softens text more than you want.

Limitations

  • This is lossy WebP, not a lossless PNG-to-WebP encoding mode. Exact pixel equality is not promised.
  • Animated PNG is rejected. Some browsers can display WebP but cannot encode it; those browsers receive a local error.
  • Large or complex images may not shrink. 16,384 pixels per edge; metadata and exact color-profile fidelity are not guaranteed.

Privacy

The PNG, decoded pixels and WebP output stay in browser memory during conversion. Reqly has no upload endpoint or external converter for this operation.

Common questions

Will transparent corners stay transparent?

Supported alpha is retained. A checkerboard in the preview is not written into the output.

Is the output lossless?

No. The WebP encoder uses a high-quality lossy setting. Keep the original PNG when exact pixels matter.

Can I convert an animated PNG?

No. This tool rejects APNG animation rather than quietly discarding its frames.
