Remove EXIF data: help & limits

About this tool

Image files can carry metadata beyond the visible picture, including camera information, comments, or location fields. This tool checks supported metadata containers, creates a new image from decoded pixels, and checks that output again before offering a download. It reports container types rather than displaying potentially sensitive metadata values.

How to use

  1. Choose a supported still image. Scanning and cleaning start automatically.
  2. The browser re-encodes the visible pixels and checks the copy. JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format; HEIC, AVIF, BMP and GIF export PNG.
  3. Read the output check and inspect the preview before downloading. Review the picture itself for any visible sensitive information.

Supported files

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, BMP, still GIF · 64 MiB · 64 megapixels. One image at a time. Maximum 16,384 pixels per edge and 128 MiB output.

How it works

Reqly inspects JPEG EXIF, XMP, comment and application segments; PNG EXIF and text chunks; and WebP EXIF and XMP chunks. It re-encodes pixels through Canvas, then rescans the output. A download is withheld if a supported source-metadata container remains. Generic format headers and browser-generated color or density information may remain.

Examples

A camera JPEG with EXIF

A JPEG containing an EXIF segment is marked EXIF detected. After re-encoding, the output is offered only when supported metadata containers are absent. Detection alone does not mean GPS was present.

A PNG with a text comment

A PNG with an embedded text chunk is marked Text metadata detected. A new PNG is made from its pixels and checked again; its transparency can remain.

Limitations

  • This is re-encoding, not a lossless metadata edit. JPEG and WebP quality may change; PNG colors can change with browser color conversion.
  • No supported metadata detected is a bounded scanner result, not proof that every possible identifying field was absent.
  • Visible faces, addresses, watermarks, and filenames can still identify people. This tool does not anonymize images.
  • The original stays on your device unchanged. Only the newly downloaded copy has been processed.

Privacy

The metadata scan stays on your device. It reports categories without printing GPS coordinates, camera identifiers, or comment values. Neither the original nor the cleaned copy is uploaded or saved in site storage.

Common questions

Does EXIF detected mean my location is stored?

No. EXIF can include many fields. This tool detects the container without reading out individual location values.

Why is my cleaned JPEG a different size?

It is encoded again from pixels. Removing metadata and using the browser’s JPEG encoder both affect the byte size and potentially image quality.

Can the tool remove text visible in the picture?

No. Pixel content is retained. Crop or edit visible sensitive information separately before sharing.
